Finding the Perfect Table Lamps is Easier Than You Think

!±8± Finding the Perfect Table Lamps is Easier Than You Think

While attractive table lamps are nice, if they don't do the job you want them to in your home, you are likely going to give them the boot out to the garage or some corner of a room that you don't care about. Think about that. That means you spent money on something that wasn't really what you wanted. It would have been better if you had made an educated lighting decision to start with, and not had to deal with this disappointment. When searching for the right table lamps, here are some things to keep in mind:

Illumination

Before you start shopping for table lamps, make sure you know what you need to get out of them. Are you just looking for a lamp that will look pretty on a table, or is there a practical use for this lamp. It's important that the lamp you choose will do the lighting job you require of it. If it's to be a reading aid, you need to make sure it casts enough light to help you read, not cause you to squint. For many, the best option is to select a lamp that will support a three-way bulb, so you will have a trio of illumination options and can set the wattage to the strength that will best suit individual situations.

Size

There are many aspects of size that need to be taken into consideration when selecting table lamps.

First, look at the table surface you will be using for the lamp. How much space does it have to work with? If you want the table to be used for anything other than the lamp, you need to make sure there will be space left over once the lamp is in place. This is often something overlooked when putting a lamp on an end table. This doesn't just include the height of the lamp, but also the width of the lampshade or any protruding parts of the lamp, which could be muscling in on someone sitting in the chair beside the table.

Next you need to note the height of the lamp. You don't want it to be so short that it isn't able to appropriately light the area. At the same time, you don't want to have the light so tall that the bulb blinds those sitting near it every time they look towards it. A general rule of thumb is to measure where your ear level would be when sitting or standing by the lamp (whichever would be appropriate). That is the right height for the lamp.

Some table lamps are heavier hitters than others, and your table may not appreciate it. Pay attention to the weight of a lamp before putting it in place. You need to make sure it's not too heavy for the table it will be set on. If you have a sturdy table, this is less of a consideration than if you have a lightweight table.

Style

This is the fun part of the table lamps selection process. Take a good poll of the room you are getting it for. It's time to find a lamp that will work well in this space. Make a note of the colors that are used, the materials (gold-tone versus silver-tone or copper), and a general style and feel of the space. These notes will help you select a lamp that will better work with the room.

How To Choose The Right Tiffany Lamp For Your Home

!±8± How To Choose The Right Tiffany Lamp For Your Home

Tiffany Lamps, designed by Mr. Louis Comfort Tiffany in the 19th century, have been since played a major part in enhancing many a home décor. It is not only colorful and beautiful to the eyes, but also are useful illuminating devices that is at par with any light source we usually use at home. It is unfortunate that there are still some people amid us who think that Tiffany lamps are more of a decorating piece than a functional device.

When Mr. Tiffany first made his brand of Tiffany lamps, he used hand cut colored glass pieces and copper foils to hold them in place. With changing times, now, it is no more hand made, and in place of copper foils and colored glass, other costly materials are used instead. The fact that there are Tiffany lamps which costs millions of dollars will give you an idea about what all materials can go into the making of a fancy Tiffany lamp.

Hence, not be amused when in the lamp shops near you, you find hundreds of Tiffany lamps and shades, costly and cheap, in different shapes, sizes, and functional designs. But, the real test is choosing one, the right lamp, for your home, that matches its decor.

So, how to select the right Tiffany lamp for your home? Well, cost is one factor, but at affordable rates, still there are hundreds of models available, whether it is accent lamps, cloth lamps, traditional lamps or wisteria lamps you may be looking for. Firstly, look for the color scheme and see if it matches your home décor. The same principle applies for the lamp bases and styling as well. Keep in mind, when you hear the names Wisteria, Dragonfly lamps, or Rose style, they may be named after its base or the theme on which the lamp design is based. Find the ones that meet your requirements, taste, and budget.

Another aspect to look for in Tiffany lamps is the scale of the lamp and the size of its shade. If it is a table lamp, it preferably should be short and the shade effectively covering the bulb and directing the glow only downwards. Also, important is the circumference of the shade, which ideally must not be protruding too far. Else, there is the chance of somebody knocking it off its base accidentally when walking by. In the case of ceiling fixtures and floor lamps, also consider its fitting and height respectively.

Finally, the wattage of the Tiffany lamps; it must ideally based on its purported function and use. For accent lamps and general illumination purposes, any wattage will serve the purpose. However for reading, more light may be required and a 100W bulb will be just perfect. The same is the case with floor lamps, certain wall fixtures, chandeliers, and pool lights.

You could find more resources on Tiffany lamps in the web. In fact, the choices available are simply aplenty and if there is any limitation, then it could be only your imagination. Also, always look for genuine makes and be careful not to get duped by duplicates.

The Contributions of Clara Driscoll to Tiffany Lamps

!±8± The Contributions of Clara Driscoll to Tiffany Lamps

Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848 -1933), the founder of Tiffany Studios in New York, began his stained glass art creations with colorful picture windows and the debut of the Tiffany Lamp followed in 1895. It has been thought, for many years that these lamps, window panels and various Tiffany items had been created by Tiffany his self, independently. It was also believed that, following the closing of Tiffany Studios in the 1930"s, that the archives of Tiffany Studios glass works and designs had been lost.

However, by the many endeavors of art historians, scholars, and curators from the New York Historical Society who were able to locate several boxes of noteworthy records, Clara Driscoll has been recognized as a prominent creative force in the design of Tiffany Lamps.

Originally of Tallmadge, Ohio, Clara Driscoll (1861-1944) was primarily the supervisor in charge of the Womens' Glass Cutting Department of Tiffany Studios. These talented women who were hired from assorted schools of art, were instrumental in the development of these early Tiffany lamps that embraced the botanical and natural world.

Clara Driscoll's career with Tiffany Studio continued for twenty years during which she is believed responsible for up to 60 breathtaking designs of Tiffany lamps and windows. Her first design, as confirmed by her original letters and the recently published book "A New Light on Tiffany", was the Daffodil. Other elegant illustrations followed.

1. The Dragonfly Shade (1899) an incredible display of dragonflies, leaves and habitat set forth in brilliant purple greens and yellows.

2. Perhaps her most famous design, the Wisteria Tiffany Lamp came to life in 1901. Wisterias flowing flowers descending in white, colorful blues, yellows and oranges.

3. The Peony Lamp was designed by Clara Driscoll between 1900 -1904. Vibrant red peonies arranged alongside green leaves within a yellow and white natural environment.

4. Born in 1904 was the Arrowhead Tiffany lamp. This Tiffany Lamp Shade is colored in green, yellow, red, white, and blue. Its bronze base is a beautiful masterpiece which, is called, "Cattail Pond Lily base" designed before 1905.

The inspirational artistic expressions of many went into the creation and production of Tiffany products, as it still does today. We offer a variety of lamps including Tiffany table lamps.
